Note to self:
When using the UW-IMAP toolkit in restrictBox or closedBox modes, or even with local patches, it is helpful to have a “vanilla” version of the utilities around, for they may not work as expected. It took me a while to figure out why
mailutil prune `pwd`/Trash “before 18-may-2008”
was not working as expected. Our local version was linked with a c-client.a with restrictBox = -1 and a local version of getpwnam(3).
For our WC we use a Pucciplast ECO built-in tank. It has a clever design and it saves space. However, the plate that holds the flush buttons got damaged. We tried to replace it by contacting the dealer that we bought it in the first place. Unfortunately they were no longer working with their products.
So I turned to Pucciplast and asked them whether I could buy directly two chromium covered cover plates (one to replace the broken one, and one for the future, just in case). Within a day Pucciplast replied that they could not sell us directly the product. However, they would sent us two plates free of charge. Now this is what I call customer support! We were asked to photograph the broken one and send the photo back to them. Which we did.
Today I installed the new cover plate. So there:

Είμαι στο τραπέζι του σαλονιού. Όχι τόσο μινιμαλιστικό surrounding όσο αυτό στο unclutterer δηλαδή. Διακρίνονται ένα ραδιοφωνο (που παίζει “Παρέα με τα Νούμερα“) το προστατευτικό οθόνης-πληκτρολογίου του laptop, ένας καναπές και το μπουκάλι νερού του μικρού. Α ναι, το laptop στηρίζεται σε δύο λαστιχένιες σφήνες που κανονικά κρατάνε πόρτες. Ιδέα που πήρα από το lifehacker.

I had a talk with a friend the other day and he told me that he does not run MIMEDefang on his systems. Well I do and since most people run MIMEDefang just to be able to run ClamAV and SpamAssassin from one place, I want to explain why. Because when you have a hammer it is better to have more than two nails.
I like running MIMEDefang because it gives me a Perl interpreter at hand and a set of handy routines to manipulate every message that passes through the mail server (header and body). So for any weird idea that I have and I need a proof of concept, I have a full programming language on my email server waiting to run it. And if I have performance issues, well I can always (re)write it in C.
I really think it pays off to invest sometime to learn how to change stuff in mimedefang-filter(5) and how to write your own versions of the filter_* routines.

Tribute to Honor Jim Gray

Jim Gray’s family, friends and colleagues have arranged a public day of talks and reminiscences in his honor, to be held on May 31, 2008, at UC Berkeley. All are welcome.
Although Dr. Gray will be officially listed as missing until 2012, his family has asked that we have this Tribute now, to honor him before too much time has passed.
There are two parts to the Tribute. The General Session that begins the day is intended for the general public. The Technical Sessions will go through the afternoon, and are intended for a computer science audience. The organizers request that people wishing to attend the Technical Sessions register in advance on the web, to facilitate planning.
