Μεγάλης κλίμακας πρόβλημα στους DNS servers

Ο Dan Kaminsky ανακοίνωσε ένα πρόβλημα στο πρωτόκολλο του DNS, γεγονός που σημαίνει πως επηρεάζονται οι περισσότερες υλοποιήσεις. Μπορείτε να διαβάσετε σχετικά εδώ και εδώ.

Textbook torrents

Στο Interesting People τρέχει ένα thread σχετικά με ένα site το οποίο προσπαθεί να διανείμει textbooks μέσω torrent. Από τα πιο ενδιαφέροντα σχόλια μέχρι στιγμής:

Ο φοιτητής που ξεκίνησε το δίκτυο θεωρεί την κίνησή του ως δείγμα πολιτικής ανυπακοής, για να εισπράξει την απάντηση πως:

Update: Γράφει ο Tim O’Reilly: “And printing cost, as the original poster points out, is less than 20% of the cost. There *might* be some savings there, but there’s actually a lot of digital infrastructure required that imposes costs that weren’t present in old school publishing.”

on B-trees and deletion

Από τα πιο ειλικρινή σχόλια που έχω διαβάσει ποτέ:

Deletes are very similar, except that they involve contractions.

This is a piece of fiction that we tell to undergraduates.

Για αυτό υπάρχει και το “Implementing Deletion in B+-trees” του Jannink. Είναι για main memory trees βέβαια, αλλά είναι μια αρχή. Και για όποιον θέλει να ψάξει παραπάνω:

Τον τελευταίο καιρό λαμβάνω ένα επίμονο ελληνικό image spam το οποίο συνοδευτικά με την εικόνα στέλνει και αυτή την παράγραφο:

Σύμφωνα με το άρθρο 14 του Νόμου 2672/1998 (ΦΕΚ 290 τ.Α) , τα μηνύματα e-mail, για να είναι έγκυρα θα πρέπει να περιέχουν απαραίτητα : Ονοματεπώνυμο ή επωνυμία (για Νομικό πρόσωπο), ταχυδρομική διεύθυνση κατοικίας, αριθμό τηλεφώνου ή fax, ιδιότητα του χειριστή. Αν τα μηνύματα προέρχονται απο υπηρεσία ή Δημόσιο φορέα να περιέχουν επιπλέον θέμα, ημερομηνία, αριθμό πρωτοκόλλου. Η εικόνα περιέχει όλα τα προβλεπόμενα κατά τη σημείωση, εκτός από την ιδιότητα του χειριστή. Το ερώτημα είναι: Εάν ο παραλήπτης είναι τυφλός, διαβάζει το email του με text mail reader ή δεν διαβάζει images από τον mail client έτσι κι αλλιώς, πως μπορεί να θεωρεί “νομότυπο” (έστω και εν μέρει) ένα τέτοιο μήνυμα;

Thank you Pucciplast!

For our WC we use a Pucciplast ECO built-in tank. It has a clever design and it saves space. However, the plate that holds the flush buttons got damaged. We tried to replace it by contacting the dealer that we bought it in the first place. Unfortunately they were no longer working with their products.

So I turned to Pucciplast and asked them whether I could buy directly two chromium covered cover plates (one to replace the broken one, and one for the future, just in case). Within a day Pucciplast replied that they could not sell us directly the product. However, they would sent us two plates free of charge. Now this is what I call customer support! We were asked to photograph the broken one and send the photo back to them. Which we did.

Today I installed the new cover plate. So there:

Νομίζω πως σαν κίνηση άργησε κάτι χρόνια: Το Yahoo! Mail ανακοίνωσε πως δίνει πλέον τη δυνατότητα στους χρήστες να επιλέγουν δύο ακόμα domain names (πέρα από τα κλασσικά yahoo.com, yahoo.gr, yahoo.co.uk, κ.λπ.):

Καλή προσπάθεια, ενδιαφέρον και το press announcement:

“Yahoo! Inc. (Nasdaq:YHOO) today announced the global availability of two new e-mail domains that will give users the chance to register for the e-mail address or Yahoo! ID they have always wanted. People can finally say goodbye to CutiePie4Ever80 or mattclark1977@yahoo.com and get a new Yahoo! e-mail address at ymail.com and rocketmail.com.”

αλλά γράφει ο Ryan:

“There is not any way to link or merge the accounts.”

Οπότε ποιο το όφελος για κάποιον να “ανοίξει” ένα ymail account και να μη μπορεί να το κάνει link με το υπάρχον Yahoo! Mail account; Εάν δεν μπορεί να το κάνει link / merge / migrate είναι το ίδιο σα να το άνοιγε στο βασικό ανταγωνιστή. Και αφού είναι το ίδιο, γιατί να μην το κάνει κιόλας;
