DNS-BH

Βρήκα λίγο χρόνο και έβαλα έναν από τους name servers μας να “τρέχει” τις ζώνες της DNS-BH Mailware Domain Blocklist. Έτσι ο opendns.tee.gr (212.70.194.242) εκτός από forwarder προς το OpenDNS εξυπηρετεί και αυτές. Σκέφτομαι όμως:

Εφόσον τα συγκεκριμένα malware domains δεν τα εξυπηρετούν οι “κανονικοί” name servers, πόσοι χρήστες θα επιλέξουν να αλλάξουν το default ώστε να έχουν ένα DNS server που θα τους βοηθάει να αποφεύγουν μερικές κακοτοπιές; Άντε να είναι και 5 όλοι κι όλοι.

Από την άλλη εάν έβαζα τις συγκεκριμένες ζώνες στους domain servers που χρησιμοποιούν οι χρήστες by default, θα είχαν στη διάθεσή τους μια διαφορετική εικόνα του δικτύου, χωρίς να είναι επιλογή τους αυτό. Πόσοι θα παραπονιόνταν; Άντε να ήταν άλλοι 5.

was not working as expected. Our local version was linked with a c-client.a with restrictBox = -1 and a local version of getpwnam(3).

social networks

Ο Guy Hagen γκρινιάζει (“I am grateful that this web 2.0 phenomenon has brought so much attention and prestige to the field of social network analysis but at the same time it has trivialized it.”) για την κατάχρηση του όρου “social network”. Στην πραγματικότητα αυτό που ο πολύς κόσμος ονομάζει social network, είναι ένα social network service:

  • A social network is a social structure made of nodes (which are generally individuals or organizations) that are tied by one or more specific types of interdependency, such as values, visions, ideas, financial exchange, friendship, kinship, dislike, conflict or trade. The resulting structures are often very complex.
  • A social network service focuses on building online communities of people who share interests and activities, or who are interested in exploring the interests and activities of others. Most social network services are web based and provide a variety of ways for users to interact, such as e-mail and instant messaging services.

Και δεν είναι μόνο οι ορισμοί από το Wikipedia. Ο όρος social network πρωτοχρησιμοποιήθηκε από τον J. L. Moreno αρκετά πριν από το 1934 και το “Who Shall Survive?” (Πρέπει να σκέφτηκε τον όρο κάπου στα 1916). Αλλά όπως σημειώνει και ο Joshua O’Madadhain στο SOCNET:

“I don’t like this abuse^H^H^H^H^Hevolution of terminology either–and I intend to continue to make the distinction myself–but I wouldn’t hold out much hope of changing the common usage. There are a lot more of ‘them’ than there are of ‘us’. Firefox 3 default mail clients

Μεγάλης κλίμακας πρόβλημα στους DNS servers

Ο Dan Kaminsky ανακοίνωσε ένα πρόβλημα στο πρωτόκολλο του DNS, γεγονός που σημαίνει πως επηρεάζονται οι περισσότερες υλοποιήσεις. Μπορείτε να διαβάσετε σχετικά εδώ και εδώ.

Η ανάγκη για αναβάθμιση είναι άμεση.

Textbook torrents

Στο Interesting People τρέχει ένα thread σχετικά με ένα site το οποίο προσπαθεί να διανείμει textbooks μέσω torrent. Από τα πιο ενδιαφέροντα σχόλια μέχρι στιγμής:

Ο φοιτητής που ξεκίνησε το δίκτυο θεωρεί την κίνησή του ως δείγμα πολιτικής ανυπακοής, για να εισπράξει την απάντηση πως:
